Understanding Dental & Vision

Most health plans barely touch dental and vision care. Here's what a standalone plan actually covers, and how the tiers work.

How Dental Coverage Is Structured
Dental plans typically organize care into levels — and vision is usually a separate add-on alongside it.
Level 1
Preventive Care
Cleanings, exams, and X-rays — usually covered at or close to 100%, since catching problems early is cheaper for everyone.
Level 2
Basic Procedures
Fillings, extractions, and similar routine treatment — typically covered at a partial percentage after any waiting period.
Level 3
Major Procedures
Crowns, root canals, dentures — the more expensive care, usually with the longest waiting period and lowest coverage percentage.
Add-On
Vision
Eye exams, glasses, and contacts — often bundled with dental as a combined plan, or available as its own standalone rider.
Words You'll Hear a Lot
A few terms worth knowing before comparing dental and vision plans.
Waiting Period
The length of time after your plan starts before certain benefits kick in — often none for preventive care, but several months for major procedures.
Annual Maximum
The total amount the plan will pay out per year. Once you hit that cap, you're responsible for the rest until the next plan year.
In-Network
Dentists and eye doctors who've agreed to the plan's negotiated rates. Staying in-network usually means lower out-of-pocket costs.
Materials Benefit
The specific vision benefit covering the actual glasses or contact lenses, separate from the eye exam itself.
Two Common Paths
Most people get dental and vision coverage one of two ways.

Standalone Dental/Vision Plan

Purchased on its own, separate from your medical coverage — useful if your health plan doesn't include dental and vision at all, which is common.

Bundled with Other Coverage

Added alongside a Medicare Advantage or supplemental plan, often at a lower combined cost than buying each piece separately.
