All my life, I wanted to be a stockbroker. I went to school for finance, got my degree, and became one. But after a couple of years, I was sick and tired of being around people who just didn’t care — where it was all about greed. I really wanted to help people, so I eventually moved into the insurance industry, figuring I’d just give it a shot.
I didn’t realize how powerful it would be.
Within my first year, I sold life insurance policies to a couple to help them out later in life. Not more than six months later, the husband passed away.
Back in those days, in 2006, you actually handed physical checks to people instead of wiring the money. I handed his widow the check, and she cried. She was grieving the loss of her husband — but she cried with joy and relief, because this was one less thing she had to worry about.
That was the moment I realized how important insurance really is. It goes far beyond just medical insurance — which matters, don’t get me wrong — but it’s really about how you control your financial risk. That’s something I love, and it’s a lesson I carried over from my days as a stockbroker: controlling your risk so life’s surprises don’t wipe you out.
Ultimately, I just love helping people out. I love that moment when it hits them and they start to understand how important having a proper insurance package is for them and their families.
